The ‘Clos la Néore,’ a sub-parcel of the ‘Monts Damnés’ hillside, has been farmed by the Vatan family since 1789. Yields as low as 1/3 those of other top Sancerre producers makes commercializing the wine challenging, relatively high prices for the appellation notwithstanding.
Aging in foudre has a dramatic texturizing effect. For years I found flavor richness to be the wine’s most startling feature though that seems wrong now. The spherical, multi-layered texture dissents so sharply from Sancerre ‘crispness’ that regional comparisons are useless. We’re texturally closer to a Raveneau premier cru than other expressions of the ’Mont Damnés’ terroir.
